GENERATIVE DESIGN PROJECTOR ENCLOSURE

Functional art has a large emphasis in the Lumenarius design process. Any given system or component needs to function optimally while also looking good.

Generative design is a process which enables the best of both worlds and that is what this piece is all about.

For a recent installation in the lobby of Amazon’s Seattle Headquarters Lumenarius was tasked with creating a projection mapping system that would activate a sculpture of books.

The projector itself was to be visible in the lobby and for that to look the part it needed to be stylish and physically sound. The interface where the enclosure met the ceiling was of utmost importance. A monolithic piece of aluminum would do but it would be too heavy. Enter generative design.

This process allowed for the simulation of the stresses involved and the procedural subtraction of excess material to lighten the load without compromising the integrity. After many rounds the following result was produced which was in turn cut into reality by a CNC router.

It was a beautiful moment when the installation finally came together. We were absolutely thrilled with the result and so was the client and installation team.
